Desi Ghee is a famous Ayurvedic herbal medicine that can treat a number of ailments and is also used in treating many injuries. She is said to have been the wife of Balabhadra, the fifth richest man in India at the time of his demise. She was also married to Jatin Lalit, the author of the renowned Indiatakari or "green book", considered to be one of the most important texts on Ayurveda. Desi was also one of the few women who wrote extensively on Ayurveda, in various publications. Pure Desi Ghee is well known for her delicious and nutritious recipes and healthy weight loss programs. However, her claims to have treated a wide range of ailments and illnesses by using holistic methods are not supported by any solid scientific research. Many of her books are on sales however, and she is said to have inspired many people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. This article discusses some of the common ailments that she claimed to have cured using Ayurvedic methods, without reference to conventional medicine. The first disease that Desi Ghee recommended for weight loss was constipation. Constipation is caused due to stress, anxiety, prolonged and repeated physical activity, poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle. As a remedy for constipation, Desi Ghee advised that the body should be cleansed of all its toxic waste, both from the inside and out. She used various digestive herbs such as Charaka Malini, Patha Vida, Kutki Churna and Musta Marigold to cleanse the body. Apart from being an excellent weight loss agent, these herbs are excellent for the digestion and help to prevent many other ailments including allergies, skin disorders and cancer. Diet is also a key aspect for weight loss and keeping the body fit and healthy. Desi Ghee also advocated the use of a good body scrub made of natural ingredients like coconut oil and turmeric paste. Herbal medicines that are used as body scrubs include Mandukparni, Apamarga and Sahinjan (allium sativum). Herbal medicines that can be used to cure internal ailments include Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Tandullya (Amaranthus polygamus), Nimba (Azadirachta indica) and Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica). Skin problems are also a common problem in Indian society today. They range from fungal infections, psoriasis, eczema and many more. The skin problems can be treated using medicines like Vishwa (Zinziber officinalis), Kutki, Musta Sahinj or even medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta) and Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba). Medicines like Mahanarayan oil, Mahamash oil and Behada oil can be used for skin care. A regular diet that includes lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals helps in healthy skin. Desi Ghee on the other hand provides additional nourishment to the skin cells by strengthening the cellular walls. In addition to that, she protects the skin cells by increasing their antioxidant level. Antioxidants help in slowing down the aging process, control inflammation and reduce cell damage caused due to free radicals. Some other diseases that she prescribes are ADHD, cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes. These are all natural and are specifically manufactured by using herbs like Bhringaraj. Herbal medicines like Triphala Guggulu, Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Tulsi, Chitrak and Behada are some of the most popular ingredients that are used in her products. She believes that we should use natural products for better health rather than taking medications that contain chemicals and synthetic substances.
